Ares Vista and other P2P file sharing programs have been in the eye of the storm, with the entertainment industry putting pressure on their respective governments to ban file sharing. However, governments have refrained from taking in stringent measures for the mere fact that file sharing is not legal. Moreover, Ares Vista is an open source program, which means there is no company involved either. Online copyright policing does not affect Ares at all.
Developers are free to build on the program, which is something they have done well. No government would possibly want to displease millions of users who aren’t at fault just to satisfy big wigs in the entertainment industry. Moreover, programs like Ares Vista do well to serve lesser known artists, who have the opportunity to showcase their talent and reach out to the largest audience possible. Instead of unfairly trying to police file sharers, the authorities and all concentred in the entertainment industry need to find better alternatives to ensure that artists as well as music lovers benefit.
The fundamental right to freedom of expression is what the authorities need to consider instead of turning their guns on P2Ps. The sheer consequences of such a move would in fact be hard to imagine. No ISP in their right mind would want to turn cyber cop and risk their business for a futile cause. Many governments, at the instance of the entertainment industry, have considered ordering the blocking of access to download sites and restricting broadband connections in a bit to appease the industry.
However, thankfully they have been wise enough to refrain from these measures, so far. So, Ares Vista still reigns supreme amongst the P2Ps, not just because of governments staying away, but the sheer power of the program that has been a boon to millions of file sharing enthusiasts.
